Our Commercial Lines State Management team is currently seeking a Commercial Lines Associate State Manager to join their team.
This is a full-time, exempt role. This role is eligible for a fully remote arrangement.
Overview/Summary:
This position assists in the development, implementation, and management of pricing and distribution plans for assigned states which have significant strategic and financial importance to the enterprise. Working directly with the both the State Manager and distribution arm of the organization, the Associate State Manager aggressively collaborates in the development, execution and monitoring of operating plans resulting in CL objectives, including the areas of combined ratio, revenue growth, regulatory management, and legal compliance.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Analyze industry, geographic, account composition and LOB to identify trends within your assigned territory in the following areas: Loss Ratio, Production, Portfolio, Flow, Pricing & Retention, etc.
Coordinate, facilitate and lead communication of findings and recommendations, underwriting philosophies, financial results and product information to State Manager, RVP, UW Managers, RSD and other Home Office organization leaders across the enterprise. Make recommendations for follow-up analysis
Partner with State Manager to develop key metrics for success, and report monthly / quarterly on progress to the Commercial Lines operating plan and associated long term strategic goals
Develop, implement, and manage operating plans for assigned states, including long term state strategies, pricing and volume plans designed to meet or exceed Commercial Lines objectives
Analyze and shaping blocks of business across geography, agency, time and characteristics for potential consolidation deals
Understand how source data impacts reporting and analysis while working with analysts across the business. Searches out, identifies and implements best practices for continuous improvement of the team’s analytical capabilities
Develop an in-depth knowledge of state markets and key competitors by product line and integrate the insights to support business strategies
Complete ad hoc requests for stakeholders across the enterprise in a timely fashion. Effectively manage time and multiple priorities
Provide independent insights and thought partnership with Field and HO leadership on driving strategy for assigned territory
Ownership of rate reviews, including leading the preparation of small state filings, follow up analysis, as well as contribution to assessing competitive position and opportunity
Coach and mentor team members
Own the overall management of smaller states
Proactively perform projects/analysis that requires knowledge of advanced financial concepts and methods
Develop a broad base of industry knowledge and current economic and business trends
Acts as a change agent and effectively focuses the resources during times of transition and change
Required Skills, Key Competencies and Experience:
Business and financial acumen
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment
Results oriented/Self starter, able to proactively anticipate and guide one’s own workload
Expansive knowledge and understanding of the insurance industry and all SC products and state nuances
Willingness to ask questions and be inquisitive
Willingness to learn and understand the insurance industry
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels and audiences and influence without authority across various disciplines (Field/Finance/Actuarial/etc.)
Consistently demonstrating analytical, problem solving, decision making and negotiation skills. Able to not only compile and synthesize data, demonstrated ability to apply judgment to interpret and draw out findings from analysis and reporting
Ability to create own work based on identified needs of the territory and complete without oversight
Demonstrating strong Project Management skillset
Can use a wide range of tools and techniques to gather and compile data
Comprehensive working knowledge or core State Management practices like rate reviews, rate adequacy, mix monitoring, planning & forecasting, etc.
Ability to leverage networks and relationships within and outside of functional area to complete work
Ability to perform duties with very limited/no oversight
Ability to draw conclusions and communicate findings & recommendations in a concise manner
Typically 2 to 5 years commercial or personal lines insurance experience managing a state operating plan.
Absent direct commercial or personal lines insurance experience, MBA plus 5 to 8 years broad based experience in financial services
