Clinical Interpreter

Job Description: • Provides accurate, complete Spanish/English interpretation for patients, families, and healthcare providers through phone, video remote interpreting (VRI), and in-person interactions as needed. • Facilitates clear communication regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, procedures, discharge instructions, and informed consent. • Translates written materials such as patient education documents, consent forms, discharge instructions, insurance forms, and clinic communications with linguistic and cultural accuracy. • Ensures confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA, UAMS policies, and language-access standards during all patient interactions. • Maintains professionalism, impartiality, and cultural competence while supporting equitable patient care for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients. • Conveys meaning-for-meaning interpretation between providers and patients without omission or alteration. • Identifies communication barriers and recommend solutions to improve patient understanding and workflow efficiency. • Assists patients with appointment scheduling, clinic registration, and navigation of healthcare services in their preferred language. • Utilizes medical terminology appropriately in both English and the target language during clinical encounters. • Supports departmental operations through scheduling, documentation, reporting, interpreting logs, and participation in meetings or quality initiatives. • Educates staff on interpreter-services best practices, cultural sensitivity, and language-access compliance requirements when applicable. • Operates telehealth technology, video platforms, phones, and related interpreting equipment effectively in remote and clinical settings. • Adheres to national standards for healthcare interpreting and maintain required interpreter certifications and continuing education. • May perform other duties as assigned. Requirements: • Bachelor's degree OR High School diploma/GED plus four (4) years medical interpreting experience • Must pass a language proficiency test administered through UAMS during the interview process. • Complete 40 hours of Bridging the Gap medical proficiency training and obtain National Certification within one year of hire. • Must be fluent in Spanish and English (Read, Write, and Speak) and proficiently interpret and translate from English to Spanish and/or Spanish to English. • Certified as a medical/health care interpreter and/or proven medical interpreting proficiency.
